ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to determine the contribution of snacks to the Energy and nutrient intake of under graduates in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike. To achieve the objective of this study, a cross sectional survey was carried out using a total of two hundred respondents (106 males and 94 females) who were randomly selected. Two hundred (200) pre-tested and validated questionnaire were used to obtain information on socio economic characteristics and food habits. Anthropometric characteristics were also assessed which included Body mass index (BMI), weights kilogrammes (kg), heights in metres (m), mid arm circumference in centimeters. Energy and nutrient intake data were also obtained. Weighed food intake was carried out to get the nutrient intake of the respondents. The information from the questionnaire was analyzed using the SPSS version 15. The result showed that snacks contributed over 80% of their energy intakes and less than 50% of their protein intake. Contribution of snacks to calcium intake was very low for male students (27.4%) and low for females (40.1%). Over 50% of their iron and Ascorbic acid intakes were derived from snacks. It was recommended that since all students took a 200 level course in nutrition, education on choice of nutritionally superior snacks such moi-moi, okpa, fruits, vegetables and meaty snacks should be included in their snacks.
