ABSTRACT
The organic household waste fraction originating from Umuahia metropolis was analyzed with respect to visible contaminations, degradation and chemical composition including heavy metals, using samples from 2 tonnes of material. After manual sorting and magnetic separation of the waste, another 20% of wet weight was observed as impurities and 80% as inorganic solid wastes. Of these, plastics constituted 75.5% and metals 13.6% of wet weight. Where 80% sorted as organic solid waste, was evaluated, 8% was observed as paper waste and 92% was noted as pure organic waste materials. The wastes were dehydrated using diastic microbes obtained from the snail (Achatinafiilica.y Cellulose constituted 169-130g kg'1 DM, crude fat 179-120g kg'1 DM, starch 160 - 101g kg'1 DM, lignin 113-80g kg'1 DM, hemicelluloses 56 - 6g kg'1 DM and sugar 22 - 49g kg'1 DM; while the energy value was 14.24 - 10.28 MJ kg'1 DM. The concentrations of cadmium and mercury found in the sorted waste were low (P<0.05) among the treatments, similar data were obtained on molybdenum and other metals and nutrients studied.
