ABSTRACT
Various microorganisms are able to invade the urinary tract and can be involved in the
pathogenesis of urinary tract infection. The isolation and identification of bacteria species
from urine samples of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture students (MOUAU)
students and determination of its antibiotics sensitivity were carried out. This revealed that
out of forty-five (45) urine samples examined from the male and female students of
MOUAU, thirty four (34) showed positive growths at 73.3% frequency occurrence, while
eleven (11) samples showed negative cultures at 24.4% frequency occurrence respectively. It
was also revealed that a total of five (5) bacteria species were isolated and identified by their
morphological characteristics, pigmentation on media, microscopy, and biochemical
methods. The bacterial species isolated from the urine samples include Escherichia coli,
Klebsiella spp. Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus spp and Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus
aureus respectively. The distribution and percentage occurrence of bacterial isolates from the
urine specimens were different. In the urine specimens from female individuals, the
predominant bacterial isolates were Staphylococcus aureus 19(35.8%), followed by
Escherichia coli 17(32.1%) and Klebsiella spp 11(20.7%), while in male individuals the
predominant bacterial isolates were Staphylococcus aureus 11(34.3%), followed by
Escherichia coli 9(28.1%) and Klebsiella spp 6(18.8%). It was also revealed in this study that
the antibiotic susceptibility and resistant profile for bacteria isolates varied. Escherichia coli
and Staphylococcus aureus showed high level of sensitive to the antibiotics Rifampicin
(20mcg), Ciprofloxacin (lOmcg), Ampiclox (20mcg), and Gentamycin (lOmcg), while the
resistant profile of the isolates revealed that Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus had
highest number of isolates resistant to the antibiotic drug Rifampicin (20mcg) and
Chloramphenicol (30mcg). This implies that these antibiotics cannot be used as empirical
therapy for urinary tract infection particularly in the study area. However, Rifampicin
(20mcg), Ciprofloxacin (lOmcg), Ampiclox (20mcg), and Gentamycin (lOmcg) antibiotic
were the most effective drug against urinary tract infections, thus could be of alternative of
choice to use and to control bacterial infection as an effective antibacterial agent.
