Availability And Utilization Of Counseling Services Among Secondary School Students In Umuahia North Local Government Area Of Abia State:- Chikezie S. C

Abstract

 This study focuses on the availability and utilization of counselling services among secondary school adolescents in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Ahia state. Two research questions and one hypothesis were raised to guide the study. The design for the study is a descriptive survey. The Area of study is Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia state. The population consist of all in-school adolescents in Umuahia North LGA . Multi-stage sampling technique was used to arrive at a sample size of 100 in-school adolescents. The instrument for data collection was a well-structured questionnaire consisting of three sections: section A, was used for bio data, Section B measured the extent of availability of counseling services and section C is on Utilization of counseling services in schools. Content and face validity was determined by two experts in measurement and evaluation from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. The reliability of instrument was - determined using Cronbach Alpha and it yielded an index of 0.71, The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The finding of study revealed that counselling services were moderately available to students but were not utilized by students. The major recommendation is that Counsellors should create more awareness through moral instruction and morning assembly on counselling services freely available to students.
