ABSTRACT
Incessant electric power failures in Nigeria have been a source of concern to the previous and present government. Series of efforts to ensure constant and steady supply of power have been made, yet electric power supply to final users has not improved to desired level. In this study, the availability and reliability of a gas power plant was investigated using mean time to failure and mean time to repair. These parameters seek to identify the extent of time the power plant will be available to deliver electricity to the teeming consumers. Also, exponential probability distribution function was used to determine the expected duration of electricity generation by the power plant. The study showed that the power plant has high mean time to repair indicating the plant was unavailable for a long period. Also, the availability and reliability of the power plant were about 68%. This is far below the IEEE recommended standard of 99%. Finally, the probability weighted average for power generation was found to be 54.54 hours per month. This value is so small considering that we have an average of 720 hours in a month.
