Assessment Of Trace Metal Contamination In Water And Sediment Of Surface Water A Case Study Of Ihie River, Olokoro:- Nnamdi-Nji Victor I

ABSTRACT

 The deterioration of surface water in the southeast region of Nigeria is a primary issue due to the high demand for drinking and irrigation purposes in most communities. The present study was conducted in the Ihie River in Olokoro Community to analyses the water quality parameter fluctuations of the Ihie River as well as investigate the critical factors affecting its water quality, the risk to human health, and the sources oftrace metals due to direct ingestion. Twenty (20) water and sediment samples collected randomly from accessible areas ofthe Ihie River. The parameters analyzed include pH, color, temperature, TSS, TDS, EC. DO, BOD, COD, and turbidity (for water samples) and OM, OC, EA, ECEC, P, and nitrate composition (for sediment samples). Among the heavy metals measured are Zn, Ni, Cu, Cr, Cd. The findings indicated that the Ihie River exhibited higher levels of trace metal concentrations during the dry season than it did in the rainy season. Also, the measured metals were within the safety standards and would not be potentially hazardous to the aquatic environment, but they should not be consumed without proper water treatment
