ABSTRACT

This study examined the effects of bank distress on savings mobilization in Nigeria between 2001-2010. The central focus is on bank distresses causes and how it affects savings mobilization of deposit money banks. The study made use of secondaiy data,sourced for a period of lOycars. Data was collected from the CBN annual Bulletin and National Bureau of Statistics Annual Bulletin, 2010.Data was analyzed using ordinary least square (OLS regression technique) with E-view statistical softwarc.Thc result showed that there is a significant and positive relationship between non-performing loans and the amount of savings mobilized and a negative relationship between current ratio and the amount of savings mobilized during the period under review.The model has the coefficient of determination R2 value of 0.056603; this indicates that 0.05 percent variation in the savings mobilization is explained by the independent variables. The study therefore recommends that strong emphasis should be placed on bank distress prevention and detection in banks by the management.
