ABSTRACT

Assessment of dry season water quality of boreholes was carried out at Amuzuku layout, Umuahia North Local Government Area Abia State. Twelve boreholes were randomly selected and water sample collected from the boreholes for the period of three months, namely February, March and April for water quality analysis for domestic purposes. The sample was analyzed at the soil and water laboratory department of Agricultural Engineering MOUAU to investigate the quality of the borehole water in the area. The mean values obtained after analyses are 27.7+0.617oC, Temperature 6.99+0309, Electrical conductivity (9.32+5.171), Total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, Total suspended solids (TSS), Dissolved Oxygen,(DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Alkalinity, Acidity, Total hardness, Turbidity, Salinity, Nitrate, Phosphate, Calcium ion, and Magnesium ion using standard methods and evaluated with the World Health Organization standards. However, values of temperature, pH Turbidity, are putting the accepted standard given by Who Health Organization. The results indicated that water sources in Amuzuku layout, Umuahia North Local Government Area Abia State are contaminated and unfit for human consumption. Therefore, appropriate treatment measures should be made to treat the water before consumption of these boreholes water by the populace to avoid long term accumulative of health problems ofthese pollutants.
