Assessing The Role Of Auditing As A Tool For Control In Public Sector Accounting

ABSTRACT

The study examined the role of auditing as a tool for control in public sector accounting with particular reference to Abia ministry offinance. The objectives of the study are,' To ascertain what role auditing play in achieving control in public sector accounting, to examine processes and procedures set in place through auditing in public sector accounting and to determine how auditing have contributed to overall performance in public sector accounting. To achieve the objective of the study, survey research method of investigation was adopted. The researcher adopted primary data in getting the required information, questionnaire was designed to gather information relevant to this project topic. in testing the hypotheses, the study employ Chi-square and T tests were considered for conducting test of hypotheses 1, 2, 3 & 4. in order to examined the role of auditing as a tool for control in public sector discounting with particular referenced to Abia ministry of finance. The findings revealed a positive significant relationship between auditing and both curbing of bad practices and overall performance in public sector accounting. The study recommends that Abia state government should endeavor to adopt frequent audit of the finances and accounts of their parastatals. This is necessary so as to point out weaknesses in the public sector accounting control and put in place effective internal control measures that will enhance proper public sector accounting. The study also recommends that The state government should endeavor to prosecute officials or sanction such officials that are found wanting in respect to the bad practices uncovered by audit such that such activities will be minimized.
