Appraisal Of Shareholders Level Of Awareness Of Their Rights In Abia -State, Under The Companies And Allied Matters Decree 1990.

ABSTRACT

Form the analysis, it was found that shareholders in Aba and Umuahia are generally low in their level of awareness of their rights. Awareness was high in respect of those right which companies are by law to abide with ,such as the AGM and the financial statements. It was found that size of shareholding is not a significant violable of the level of awareness. The Chi-Square tests of significance also showed that the level of education is an important thctor influencing the level of awareness. In general, the higher the level of education the higher the level of awareness. A Hypothesis tested showed that the nature of the company in which a shareholder owns share has effect on his level of awareness Hence, shareholders in quoted companies generally low in their level of awareness compared to shareholders in unquoted companies. But the size of shareholding will only he a significant factor influencing the willingness to enforce their rights. On the basis of the findings, the researcher recommended the following among others. (a) Companies should be compelled to hold their AGM's at their members catchments areas. These will ftist track attendance at AGM's.
