Appraisal Of Adult Literacy Programme At The Post Primary Schools Level In Imo State, Nigeria

ABSTRACT

The study appraised of adult literacy programme in Imo State. The study sought to determine, the personal characteristics of the adult learners; ascertain the extent to which adult literacy programmes are publicized in the state; determine the extent to which personnel are available in the centres; determine administrative strategies used in the centres; ascertain the form of evaluation used by the facilitators; identify the extent to which instructional materials are provided for the programme; determine the extent to which the adult learners are motivated to participate in the adult literacy programme. The design of the study simple random sampling technique was used to select 439 adult learners in the state. The instrument used for data collection was the researchers designed questionnaire. The data were analyzed using statistical mean. The following findings were made among others. Majority of the adult learners in the programme are males; the major means of publicizing the programme are through interpersonal communications and efforts of non-governmental organizations and that the greatest source of finding the programme are school fees paid by adult learners and support form voluntary organizations. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made; state agency for mass literacy, adult and non-formal education should ensure that adequate publicity is made to create awareness on the need for adult literacy programme through mass media; state agency for mass literacy programme and others.
