Antibiotic Susceptibility Pattern Of Bacteria Isolated From Zobo Drink Sold In Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria:- Chilaka, Ijeoma J

Abstract

Antibacterial susceptibility pattern of bacteria isolation from Zobo drink sold in Umuahia was carried out. Samples of Zobo drink were purchased from different locations in Umuahia town and were analyzed for bacterial contamination. They had a total heterotrophic bacteria counts ·ranging from 4.9 x 10 cfu/g to 2.02 x 10° cfu/g. Staphylococcus aureus counts ranging from 4.2 x 10 cfu/g to 1.02 x 10° cfu/g. Escherichia coli count ranging from 5.7 x 10 cfu/g to 1.20 x 10 cfu/g coliform counts ranging from 6.6 x 10 cfu/g to 2.05 x 10 cfu/g. Lactobacillus counts ranging from 1.02 x 10° to 4.0 x 10. The bacterial isolates were Escheriachia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Lactobacillus sp., Bacillus sp, Proteus sp. and Streptococcus Jeacalis. Antibiotic susceptibility test was carried out on the organisms and Gentamicin drug has the highest zone of inhibition of about 14mm. it would appear that sample four ( 4) had the highest microbial quality than sample 1, 2 and 3. This study suggest that most of zobo drinks sold in different locations in Umuahia metropolis might be a source of food poisoning and can cause public health hazards. Therefore the need for improvement and maintenance of good hygiene practices by Zobo handlers and vendors in this state is emphasized.
