ABSTRACT

The study examined accounting information system as a tool for the management and development of small scale business enterprise using selected small scale business enterprise in Umuahia Urban area as a case study. The problems facing small scale business enterprise in Umuahia ranges from lack of fund, poor record keeping, and inappropriate attention to the business, poor management, and lack of skilled personnel. There were 63 sample size drawn out of 75 population size made up of top management staff and revenue officers of the selected business. The data was analysed using simple percentage and Chi-square method. The findings based on the result of the analysis were made; accounting information system is useful tool in the management and development of small scale enterprise in Umuahia, lack of proper record keeping and inability to establish accounting information system affects small scale business owners and their businesses. Also based on the findings, recommendations were made on the basis that accounting information system should be establish in every small scale business because it will help the management in making effective and efficient decision and help in performance evaluation, small scale enterprise should uphold its existing credible accounting information system; this will help in increasing its profitability and safeguard the assets of the enterprise.
