ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to assess the impact of financial control and accountability in public sector organization. The study was focused on the Abia State ministry of finance and the field study approach was adopted in which primary data were collected using questionnaire, personal interviews. The secondary data used were text books on financial control and accountability, journals. etc the methodology used: simple percentage was used for analysis of research questionnaire, chi-square was used for presentation and testing the hypothesis. The population is 172 and Taro-yamane's formular was used to get the sample size as 120. While quasi experimental is the types of research design adopted. The main findings of this research included: wherever financial control is planned on budgeted amount, the actual amount will not deviate as much. Internal audit and state department can be effective in controlling frauds and errors. In light of these findings, the following recommendations were made. To enhance the performance in government, the concept of accountability should be inculcated and imbibed by our public officers. Authorities should ensure that final accounts are prepared and submitted on time for auditing in the ministry.
