Social And Environmental Audit: A Tool For Enhancing Corporate Financial Performance A Study Of Selected Banks In Nigeria

ABSTRACT

 This research work seeks to know if social and environmental audit is a tool for enhancing corporate financial performance with a particular reference to few selected Banks in Nigeria. The data collected for t11is study was analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analysis. A ten years financial statement was use to ascertain the values of the corporate financial performance proxy (EPS, ROE,ROA) and a questionnaire was drafted to know the level of participation of these Banks in SEA using the KLD index method. The result of the analysis clearly showed that the null hypotheses should be rejected at a significant level of 0.05 and 0.01, meaning that social and environmental audit has a significant relationship as well as appositive effect on corporate financial performance. Hence involvement in social and environmental audit enhances corporate financial performance. The following recommendations were made, Corporation should ensure effective and efficient social and environmental audit engagement, And ensure an adequate and up to date social and environmental accounting and records. Government and other regulatory in accounting profession should come up with standards on social and environmental audit procedures and disclosures. Corporation should embrace an all inclusive social and environmental responsibility that ensure the benefit of all it's stakeholders.
