Assessment Of The Challenges Of Internal Audit Functions In Public Sector Organization A Case Study Of Federal Medical Centre Umuahia

ABSTRACT

Internal auditing is a profession and activity involved in helping organization achieve their stated objectives. It does this by using a systematic methodology for analyzing business processes, procedures and activities with the goal of highlighting organizational problems and recommending solutions. Professionals called internal auditors are employed by organizations to perform the internal auditing activity. This research work assesses the challenges of internal audit functions in public sector organization (a case study of Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia. The challenges of internal audit functions include; inability of the internal auditor to comply with auditing standards and guidelines, issue of responsibility and authority, job insecurity, occupational independence, relationship of internal and external audit, quality of service delivery etc. these challenges were investigated using primary data (questionnaire and personal interview) and secondary data (textbooks, journals, papers, internet printout). The hypothesis was tested using multiple regression analysis. Findings reveal that the qualification and experience of internal audit staff have significant effect on their effectiveness.
