Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern Of Salmonella Isolates From Poultry Feeds In Umuahia Metropolis

ABSTRACT

The antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Salmonella was investigated. A total of forty (40) feed samples (20 layers feed and 20 growers feed) were collected from the feeding trough of the birds and analyzed. Results obtained showed the presence of Salmonella in a total of seven (7) test samples which includes four (4) layers and three (3) growers feed. Antibiotics sensitivity test conducted with five (5) antibiotics (ceporex, gentarnycin, ciprofloxacin, septrih and ampicillin) showed varied levels of inhibition of the Salmonella in vitro. The Susceptibility of the Salmonella isolates to the antibiotics were shown s zone of inhibition and were interpreted as being sensitive, resistant and intermediate with an antibiotic interpretative chart.. The levels of susceptibility recorded were ceporex (7 1.43%), Gentamycin (85.41%), ciprofloxacin (42.86%), septrin 0%) and ampicillin (7 1.43%). It was observed that the variation in the potency of the different antibiotics against the Salmonella isolates may not be unconnected with variation in the strains of Salmonella involved as well as in the spectrum of activity of the different antibiotics.
